Munich, Germany ... (page 1 of 2)
Guten Morgen! We spent a couple days exploring Munich on foot. Our hotel was just across from the train station, very handy. The historic city center is pedestrian friendly. The wide streets, closed to cars, are lined with shops, restaurants with outdoor seating, vendors & lots of people. Most of the buildings were bombed during WWII. The historic restored buildings are a contrast to the modern reconstructed buildings. We listened to a Rick Steves audio walking tour as we wandered and learned about the city.

This is our hotel in Munich. It's directly across the street from the central train station. Just a 10 minute walk from the pedestrian shopping district (Marienplatz).

Munich has miles of bike paths & bike lanes. Not sure we've ever seen so many bikes. These are just a few of the bikes near the train station! Many locals bike, walk and utilize the public transportation. We walked many miles and didn't see a gas station.

This is the New Town Hall in the city central square, Marienplatz or Mary's Square. It was built in the late 1800's, flattened during WWII and reconstructed as were many buildings in Munich.

This glockenspiel is high up in the New Town Hall. It chimes at 11, Noon & 5 daily and tells the story of a noble wedding. The figures rotate on a carousel and move to music.

Munich was founded 1158 & named by the monks (or München) who lived here. The city's symbol is a little monk.

The interior of St Peter's church. It's the oldest church in Munich. It replaced the original monastery (built about 1100) in 1368.

This was a common sight as we walked, outdoor restaurant seating along the cobblestone pedestrian streets. Beer and wine was plentiful!
