Salzburg - Salt Mining
Salzburg is located along the banks of the Salzach River. The river isn't salty but named because of the cargo, salt, barges carried from mines upstream. Salt mining started long ago in medieval times, around 600 BC. Celtic miners used salt for trade and to preserve food. Over the years mining processes evolved. Salzwelten offers tours through actual mines sharing history of salt mining through the ages. We toured the mine near Hallein, about 9 miles upstream from Salzburg. It was a great tour!

We were issued miners garb for the tour.

Suited up and ready to go'
--

We rode a train into the salt mine just like the miners did. The train took us 750 meters into the mountain and 120 meters underground.
--

Crossing the border. The tunnels are located under Austria & Germany. We were not required to show passports.
--

Wheeee!!! The original mine had 40 miles of tunnels passing through 21 levels. The salt miners used sides to move down levels.
--

We slid down 2 slides to the lowest level in the mine, 210 meters deep and 1150 meters into the mountain. Roxy wasn't too sure about the first slide, she's braking!

Linda is getting a taste of the brine being sent to the settling manufactory where the salt is extracted by skimming. It's 25% salt. That's an overwhelming taste.

We took a short boat ride across a brine pond deep in the mine. The boat & pond are behind Linda. A little claustrophobic, low roof & pretty narrow & 200 meters below ground. Really interesting.
