Villach
Villach is a city in Southern Austria located along the Drau River in the province of Carinthia. It's near the borders of Italy and Slovenia. Villach is at the intersection of 3 cultures, Germanic, Slavic and Romanesque. During WWII Villach was heavily bombed by the allies due to its importance as a railway hub. Today it's a lively modern city.

Bicycling is very popular along the Drau River and hundreds of miles of bike paths in the surrounding area.

We found an ice cream vending machine! Just had to try it. Put in your coins, retrieve the cone from the dispenser, put the cone in the holder & wallah….
it's magic. Tasty too.

The walking streets had a variety of hanging art, umbrellas, butterflies and picture frames.

In 1988 the Hauptplatz (Old Town) was pedestrianised. The buildings have been restored from the WWII bombings & now are the heart of a vibrant city. The walking area is cobblestone, some wide streets with narrow alleys leading to beautiful courtyards. Lots of places to shop, eat & relax. Or have a beer!

We were inspired to rent bikes. It was a bit of a challenge because it was Sunday and most every thing was closed except cafes & restaurants. We found a bike rental online. Everything was online. We were emailed PIN numbers to unlock the bike shed & the bikes. It worked well and we happily explored some of the paths.

Riding through the countryside by Faaker Lake & passed this beauty field of Oriental poppies.

We rode along many bike paths. There was lots of signage but not really meaningful to us. Fortunately google maps got us back to our starting point. Have to have a sense of humor! We did enjoy riding!

Had to wait for the family crossing the road.

We stayed at this hotel just across from the train station. It's new, only opened a month ago. The hotel had loaner umbrellas. It's raining, time to move on!
