Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia is a small country bordered by Austria, Italy, Hungry, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea and is known for its mountains and lakes. It's a mix of Slavic, Italian and German worlds. Slovenia has been occupied for most of its recorded history dating back to 221 BC. In 1991, Slovenia declared its independence from Yugoslavia as communism ended. In 2004 Slovenia joined the EU. Ljubljana is the capital. We spent a couple days exploring Ljubljana.

Went on 2 free tours. First was an orientation & general info on the city. Second emphasized Medieval history, including a visit up to the castle. Everyplace we've been has had fortresses. Considering how many times these places have been attacked thru history, it's not a surprise.

As we walked around town we noticed graffiti everywhere. Seems it's art. There were cobblestone walkways and wide pedestrian walking streets along the Ljubljanica River.

When we arrived, this central plaza market was empty. A large space with lots tables & canopies.

The central market came alive with flowers, produce, clothing, shoes and lots of other stuff. It's open everyday but Sunday. Each afternoon everything is packed up and taken home. Many locals shop often for the fresh produce.

The Milk-O-Mat. Has unpasteurized (raw) milk from the local dairies. The bottle dispenser is on the right. The milk costs 10c to 1.3eu.
In the US, each state has its own rules. But, any milk crossing state lines to be sold is illegal.
Raw milk is one of the worst for food poisoning.
We didn't try it…

Rain didn't stop people from walking around, the umbrellas came out! We did buy collapsible ones that fit in a side pock of our backpacks. Much smaller than golf umbrellas, they kept us dry!

The Post (mail) was delivered by walking cart or bicycle. Thankfully it was a sunny day. We experienced quite a bit of rain in our stay here.

This building houses the national & university libraries. It was designed by Joze Plecnik, a Slovene architect. In Slovenia university education is 30 euros per year and students also receive a stipend for meals & lodging. There is a large university in Ljubljana with over 40,000 students.

A toast to Ljubljana! There were many many sidewalk cafes here. In fact a lot of streets were lined with tables & the restaurants had walk-up order windows. Some had a few indoor tables & of course, some were totally inside. Enjoyed the food, heavier on bread & cheese, quite tasty.
