Ortisei-St. Ulrich, Italy - Part 1 of 2
We spent the past days in Ortisei, hiking in the Dolomites-Val Gardena. Ortisei is in south Tyrol, northern Italy. The scenery and hiking was amazing! So was the weather.

We were confused by some of the street signs. Then realized that it was the same place, just in different languages. Ladin, German & Italian. Ladin is actually spoken by 90% of the residents of the Dolomite mountains.

This is the view from the balcony of our apartment. Loved watching clouds roll past!

We rode a funicular up the mountain to get to the hiking trails. With a funicular, both cars are permanently attached to a haul cable. The 2 cars pass each other midway. It was very steep, yet a smooth ride.

The view from the mountain hut at the top of the funicular. The same view that we see from the balcony of the hotel, but about 3000 ft higher. Glad we didn't have to walk up!!

Alpe di Siusi is the largest alpine meadow in Europe. There are over 200 miles of hiking trails and many lifts. There were many pastures with cows, goats, lamas, donkeys & horses. There were also many refugios (huts) with food, drinks & accommodations.

Came across about 12 horses grazing along the trail.

The food at the "mountain huts" is amazing!

Most of the trails were well signed at intersections . We had a paper trail map with recommendations from our apartment hosts. We also used the GAIA app to follow our routes.

We rode a gondola up to hiking trails in Puez Odel National Park. Pictures don't show how steep the slopes are!
