Wengen, Switzerland ... part 1
Wengen is a car free Swiss Alpine Village in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. 13,000' peaks including Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau surround the valley villages. There is an extensive transportation system consisting of buses, trains, cable cars and gondolas linking the villages. One day we rode 7 different conveyances as we toured and hiked. The weather was great and scenery was incredible!

We arrived by train from Lucerne, to the Village of Lauterbrunnen, along with many others! Here we transferred to a local cog train up to Wengen. The engine of a cog train has a drive wheel with teeth (cogs) that mesh with the cogs on the middle rail of the track, pulling or breaking as needed. The climbs are steep!

Wengen is a 20 minute ride down to Lauterbrunnen or a 20 minute ride up to Kleine Scheidegg on this cog train. From those points we either hiked or caught another ride to a view point or trail head. Lifts are all over the mountains.

Looking down on the village of Grindelwald from the north.

This is the Cliff Walk with a panoramic platform looking south at the Swiss Alps. It took us 2 hours to get there. Rode a cable car, a gondola, a bus & a 25 minute gondola to First (the name at the top of the lift). Spectacular day!

We hiked down from the top of the First lift station to a lake, Bachalpsee. From there we continued walking down to Bort, the middle station. We were happy to ride down and give our knees a break, great hike!

These scooters are hitching a ride to Bort (halfway to First) on the gondola. At Bort, some 4-wheel carts were hooked on to go to First. Both are non-motorized with excellent brakes! It's very steep with lots of switchbacks back to Grindelwald.

Wildflowers were blooming everywhere we hiked. These are European globe flowers.

At the top of most of the lifts there have been playgrounds for the kids. Dad is in the mouth of the cow trying to pull his little girl out. She was too light to carry any speed on the slide & stopped before the exit.

This is the view from our balcony. The hotel we stayed at was built in the late 1800's. It was the first hotel in Wengen.
