Chamonix
- Mont Blanc, France
Bonjour! Chamonix is a French resort town at the base of Mont Blanc, the highest
mountain in Europe, rising to 15,780'. Chamonix is known as the birthplace
of mountaineering and host of the first Winter Olympic games in 1924. A series
of lifts climb the steep slopes to panoramic views and trailheads. Popular
activities include skiing, mountaineering, climbing, trail running, hiking
and paragliding. We arrived in the rain. Each day the weather improved with
sunny skies our last day.

This mural is located in the pedestrian center of Chamonix.
It depicts 20 of the favorite mountaineering pioneers over 250 years.
It appears to be 3D, it's not! |
This is Gorges de la Diosaz. There is a walkway suspended
from the mountain side with bridges crossing the Diosaz River, climbing
up the gorge with views of 5 waterfalls. The trail was created in 1871
as a discovery trail to share with tourists. Earlier slate was quarried
from the area. Every spring the walkways are inspected & repaired
from avalanche damage. |
We traveled by cog train, gondola and 530 steps to the
foot of the Mer de Glacé, one of the Alps largest glaciers. |
|
Climbers were playing around old ice cave entrances. |
The glacier was discovered in 1741 & by 1804 they
were bringing tourists in by mules. For the last 50 years ice grottos
with sculptures are carved into the glacier. |
We took a lift up to a trail to hike & found about
30 paragliders waiting to launch. The clouds were thick & they couldn't
see the valley floor. When it cleared enough, they started running at
about 30 second intervals. |
|
The view that paraglider has must be awesome, we'll never know!! |
Our views were great all day as we hiked the Grand Balcon Sud trail. |
Saw this coming down on the gondola. A beautiful golf course. A very nice day for a walk & a round of golf. |
