Days, Chamonix-Brig-Chur-Mayrhofen
Leaving Chamonix, France we headed to Mayrhofen, Austria. To breakup the longer
train journey, we made overnight stops in 2 Swiss towns, Brig & Chur.
We enjoyed wandering around both towns.

The St Ursula guest house at Brig is a re-purposed monastery.
The outside was 1600's Jesuit architecture, the inside has been beautifully
refurbished & is very modern. Our room was very comfortable with
high ceilings & lots of natural light. |
This is the view from our window. It's the "Serenity
Garden" available to guests. |
This is the Stockalper castle in Brig, built between
1651 and 1671. It was built by Kaspar Stockapler, a Swiss entrepreneur
& politician. |

We rode the Glacier Express train from Brig to Chur.
The train had large windows and audio information highlighting points
of interest along the way. The highest point of the journey was Oberalppass,
unfortunately we were in the clouds as we climbed up. |
The Hotel Freieck in Chur is another very old refurbished
establishment. Built in 1575, it has been repurposed many times. We
had fun imagining why some of the features were so odd. Had to do with
building additions over the years. |
The Chur Cathedral sits high above the city and is the
centerpiece of the Episcopal Court. Construction was completed in 1272.
The first signs of settlement on this site date back to 1,300 to 800
BC! |

The St Martin church in Chur. It's claimed to be the
highest brick tower in the world. Notice the truck at the bottom. The
streets in all these old towns are very narrow. We are fascinated at
what maneuvering goes on when there are on-coming vehicles. |
We enjoyed an early walk around the old town area of
Chur before it was time to catch our next train. Found an interesting
sculpture along with a fountain to fill up our water bottles. |
Saw beautiful flower displays while wandering around
Chur. Actually, everywhere we've been has had gorgeous planters &
gardens. |
