Mayrhofen,
Austria
Mayrhofen is a small town, in the Ziller River Valley, in the state of Tyrol.
The town is located between the Ahorn and Penken mountains with lifts up both.
The Ahorn cable car is the largest in Austria with a capacity to carry 160
passengers! Hiking, biking and paragliding are popular summer activities.
Only a few lifts are open in summer. During the winter there is an extensive
system of lifts, ski buses and ski huts. Winter is the busy season.

The view from
our apartment looking out at the Ahorn mountains. We are planning
a hike that will take us near those peaks in the middle.?? |
This
gelato shop was just outside our apartment, too close! We had to give
it a try, several times
. |
We
made it to the Edel-Hütte!! It was a long steep climb from the
cable car so we had lots of opportunities to look at the beautiful views.
This hütte, built in 1889, serves meals & has lodging. We enjoyed
the goulash & drinks!! Then walked back down to the cable car. Glorious
weather!! |

There
were a variety of trails at the top of the Ahorn lift. Several of the
scenic view areas had information boards pointing out the mountain peaks. |
We
attended a Birds of prey show up on the mountain. We saw falcons, hawks
and owls doing close free flight maneuvers. The presenters were excellent!
Unfortunately the commentary was in German with just a bit of English
translation. |
This
is a Siberian eagle-owl named Alaska. She has a 6.5 ft wingspan. We
are just a few feet from the perch. The handlers had them flying very
close to us by placing food on perches |

Another
high altitude playground. This pond has a boulder path thru the middle
that you can jump rock to rock. A raft that you can stand on & pull
yourself to the other side. Fountains & wading areas to soothe hot
sore feet. All these areas are teaching the kids skills necessary to
hike in the Alps. |
We
rode a bus up and up an amazing mountain toll road through several tunnels
to this spot, Schlegeisspeicher. The lake is a reservoir created between
1965 and 1971. The area is part of a large nature park with |
Linda
paragliding & having a very good time! Smiled all day long!!!! |
