Oberammergau,
Germany
Oberammergau is a town in the Bavarian Alps, probably best known for the Passion
Play. In 1633 the plague came to Oberammergau, church wardens prayed for relief
and promised to enact the Passion Play every 10 years if the village was freed
of plague. The town of Oberammergau has upheld this promise and the Passion
Play has become world famous. Participants in the Passion Play must be citizens
of Oberammergau, either by birth or have lived in the town for at least 20
years. Oberammergau is also famous for woodcarving and fresco painted buildings.

Looking down on the small town of Oberammergau. |
This region is famous for its fresco painting. Frescoes
are painted in wet plaster, which requires speed & skill & ensures
a long life. This building was an orphanage which was what inspired
its Hansel & Gretel theme. |
Typical styles of fresco painting imitate architectural
elements. Houses painted with columns, balconies, shutters or fancy
trim work appear to be manors. The elements stand out looking 3 dimensional.
Beautiful! |

This is from the Little Red Riding Hood fable. This
house had many scenes painted on it. |
One of the many woodcarving shops. The woodcarving trade
dates back to the middle ages. During winter when farming slowed, woodcarving
provided income. |
A display of wooden whirli-gigs, very whimsical! |

A huddle of sheep. We figured the area had just been
mowed so the grass was tasty. |
Looking out our balcony to the Parish Church St. Peter
and Paul. Inside is the 1634 crucifix of which the Passion oath was
made in 1633. Bells ring often. We've heard church bells in most of
the towns we've visited. |
Taking a moment to appreciate life. |
