Thompson

Happy
we made it on the ferry to Whittier. We were the first in the standby
line at 4:30 A.M.! |
Relaxing
after the early wake up. |

Missed
all the icebergs coming off the glacier in the distance. |
We
hiked up Portage Pass just outside of Whittier. It wasn't a long walk,
but fairly steep uphill. Great views at the top! |
The
road to Anchorage is through this 2 1/2 mile one lane tunnel, shared
by cars & trains (not at the same time). It's designed for-40 temperatures
& 150 mile per hour winds. |

The
end of the 800 mile oil pipeline across Valdez Arm. We are waiting in
line at the ferry terminal to see if we can go standby to Whittier.
If not, it's a 300 mile drive to go around. Too fun! |
Princess
cruise ship holds about 2500 passengers docked in Whittier (with a population
of 300). |
