Sisters, OR to Prineville, OR - 45 miles - 5 hours ... 227 total miles
.....
After a relaxing day with our friends in Bend, we resumed our ride in Sisters. We're following the Adventure Cycling Trans America Bicycle Trail and using their maps that not only provide detailed route information but also lists services along the route. Today we decided to take backroads off the AC route and found the map on the iPad to be very helpful. We just bring up the route in Google Maps before we leave for the day. The built in GPS tracks where we are and the map can be expanded to show very detailed info. Don't need to be hooked into the internet!

The differences from the west side of the Cascades to the east is amazing. Being a rain forest, the West side has very dense vegetation, like there is no way to walk into the forest without a machete or bulldozer. Lots of wild flowers and shrubs. One B & B owner told us he works year round to keep the 1/2 mile trail clear around their property. Seems any hiking trails require quite a bit of maintenance to keep them open. The east side is high desert and has lots of Ponderosa Pines and Junipers. Some shorter wild flowers, no cactus, much warmer and drier.

Today we rode thru miles of ranches, farms and hay fields, with views of snow covered mountains in the distance. Often, both sides of the valley was lined with rocky buttes. Tonight we're spending the night in Prineville, trying to stay awake long enough to finish this!
