Day
32 - Columbus, MT to Billings, MT - 42
miles .......... 1233
total miles
Another beautiful day on the frontage road following the Yellowstone
River with a slight tailwind and a few baby hills. We've transitioned from ranch
country to farming. Lots of hay fields and as we got closer to Billings, corn,
sugar beets and something short with a little purple flower. Today was a people
day. We met motorcyclist Don who was very proud of his ride. He was passionate
about touring and gave us great insight into that world. Next we met Kevin who
was getting ready to participate in the 50th annual Yellowstone Boat Float this
weekend from Livingston to Columbus. This was his 27th float. The Yellowstone
is the longest undammed river in the contiguous US at 692 miles. In Laurel we
stopped at the Chamber of Commerce. After gathering some info we walked outside
to find another touring cyclist, Joel, taking a break in the park. As we chatted
a reporter, Kathleen from the Laurel Outlook, came by and and interviewed all
of us. A picture and story will be in the local paper next week, we'll send a
link. Joel is a singer traveling around the country by bicycle to gather folk
songs and stories and performing along the way. He was towing a trailer with stuff
including his guitar. We arrived in Billings early so after having something to
eat we did laundry. Services will be few and far between for the next couple days.
