Day
39 - Glen Ullin, ND to Bismarck, ND - 62
miles ......... 1686
total miles
Chatted a bit with the owners of the B&B before we headed
out. Interesting to hear their perspective of how the oil boom has affected life
in the small town of Glen Ullin. We had a tailwind so we were eager to head off
before it switched! The wind was with us all the way into Bismarck. We followed
the Adventure Cycling map into town and crossed the Missouri River on a pedestrian
bridge along the expressway. We rode to a bike shop and left our bikes for a tune
up. Roxy's niece, Chrissie, picked us up. The shop was just a mile from her house
where we were spending the night. Had a good afternoon and evening visiting with
Chrissie, husband Larry, their daughter Kenzie and boyfriend Justin.
Day
40 & 41 - Bismarck & Minot, ND - rest days??
Started the day with
errands about town. Chrissie arranged a family gathering with those who could
come down from Minot. Roxy's nephew Rob, wife Jess and daughter Layla arrived
first. 5 year old Layla has been following our blog with her Dad and wanted to
ride bikes with us, so the families went out for a walk and ride around the neighborhood.
Roxy's brother Rollie and wife Carol arrived as we were returning to the house.
We spend the afternoon visiting, eating, playing lawn games and watching a movie
outside projected on the house as it was getting dark, complete with popcorn!
After the movie we rode with Rollie and Carol back to Minot so we could be up
early to get a front row seat for the state fair parade Saturday morning.
We
were up early and along the parade route by 8 am! We joined Layla, Rob, Jess and
Jess's Mom who were there ahead of us. Then came Roxy's niece, Katy, husband Jim
and kids Tyler and Amber across the street. After the parade we met up with another
niece, Susie! We didn't get to visit with Damee, another niece, she called with
a hello.
Our good friend Marg, who lives in Manitoba, drove down and met us.
Marg is an old friend from Fairbanks who played softball, biked, hiked and skied
with us. We went to the fair and had a good time.
After a full day Rollie
drove us back do Bismarck (108 miles) so we could get back on the road in the
morning. We were exhausted, had a quick dinner and fell asleep! Good times visiting,
great to see everyone!
Day
42 - Bismarck, ND to Steele, ND - 43
miles ........... 1729
total miles
We didn't get the earliest of starts. We said good bye to Chrissie,
Larry, Kenzie, Justin (and Louie) and headed off into a light headwind. Decided
to ride on the freeway rather than follow the Adventure Cycling Route which would
take us south. We didn't have much energy this morning. Along the freeway we met
Bruce, an 80 year old, walking across America, pushing a cart. He's walked 19,000
miles in the last 3 years, this is his 3rd trip walking across the country! Amazing,
what an inspiration! Fun chatting, he tries to walk 35 miles per day. We didn't
feel quite as tired after meeting him! We're spending the night in another small
town, Steele. There is no cafe so we had dinner at the Cenex, a convenience store.
Spent the late afternoon and evening catching up with email, the blog and relaxing!
