Day 59 - Cornell, WI to Medford, WI - 47 miles ......... 2471 total miles
Wow, what a night! After setting up the tent last night it started raining. We heard thunder and wondered if we were seeing lightening flashes. Our first thought was the outhouse light was flickering like a strobe. Next we heard a loud continuous noise, kind of irritating, we hoped it would stop soon so we could get some sleep as it was around 10 pm. Then we saw a flashlight and heard a man's voice "ladies, do you hear the siren?". Turns out the siren was a storm warning and all campers were to go to storm shelters immediately. Of course, we had no idea where that was and the man noticed we didn't have a car. He said we could ride over with them and suggested collapsing our tent and placing the bikes on top of it since winds up to 60 mph were expected! We hustled out of the tent, dropped it, threw the bikes on top and headed over to his truck. Trees were down everywhere and rain was coming down in sheets. We made it to the shelter in the garage of the ranger station without incident. There was a crowd of campers gathered and we visited while the storm passed. After about an hour the ranger gave us the all clear to head back to our campsites. Our bikes and tent were fine though there was a puddle of water inside the tent. The sleeping bags were soaking it up, fortunately it wasn't too cold over night, but we didn't get much sleep. Decided we needed a hotel tonight to rest and dry out. We stopped at the first town with a hotel, Medford. The hotel was very accommodating, we spread out everywhere inside and out. We really appreciated this stop!

Day 60 - Medford, WI to Antigo, WI -
64 miles ............. 2535 total miles
Awoke this morning well rested and continued east along state highway 64. Rolled thru farmland and forests. It's very green. There aren't many towns thru this section. We stopped at the only one, Merrill along the Wisconsin River, for lunch. The state was named after the Wisconsin River. Wisconsin means "grassy place" in the Chippewa language. Tonight we're staying in Antigo. Just had some dinner and calling it an early night, going to catch up on sleep.

The team of Rangers gathered all the campers & ensured we were in shelters.

--

Dennis & Andrea saved the day, or maybe the night.
They warned us of the storm & drove us to the shelter!
--

The campsite next to us. Rangers worked into the early morning making the roads passable.
This site is where Dennis, Andrea & two friends were camped. Their friends had a truck that
would have been under this tree had they not driven it to the shelter.

--

We rode by this big field of little sunflowers.

--

Passing many churches along the road...more than bars....that's a good thing!
--

Went thru a stretch of Amish country, many horses & buggies at the farms.
--

We keep passing huge dairy farms. Wisconsin uses "America's Dairyland" on
the license plates. Appropriate name.
--

We had a shorter ride to Medford. Thought it might be wise to dry out the camping gear.
We flipped the tent over to continue draining the water out of it! Very happy to have sunny skies!
